Within the walls of my cosy art studio in Kensington, Melbourne, there are many ways to explore your desired outcome. You can share your story in the traditional way of chatting over a cup of tea. Or you can express yourself through many different art mediums, writing, movement or gesture. It’s all about being heard in the way that makes you comfortable and knowing that you are understood.
Is this therapy?
Not really, but it is therapeutic.
A better description would be ‘art inquiry’: using creative means to inquire into your own need, question or desire. Your resulting charm is a response to our inquiry.
Consciously engaging with your charm is a great way to adopt or change a pattern of behaviour to help you realise your goals.
Although having a charm or talisman would work very well alongside seeing a qualified therapist, our service is not intended for those who are suffering from serious issues or mental illness.
What makes these objects different to any other special jewellery or favourite objects I own?
Most of us own objects and jewellery that hold meaning for us. They may have been handed down through generations of family, given to us by someone special, or picked up as a memento from a favourite place. We may also simply love them for their beauty.
The essential difference is that the objects made by me are created with a specific intention in mind:
- They are created from your story and participation.
- They serve as tools for your personal use.
- They have specific meaning for you personally.
- Their purpose is aid you to facilitate change.
- They are designed to prompt your memory.
- They are designed to help you focus on your own solution to a given issue.
Tell me more about Charms. I thought they were objects for the superstitious!
Charms, Talismans and Amulets are objects and images that have been created by people since recorded history. These images were created for a particular purpose. For example, if you were an ancient Egyptian and you feared illness, you may have worn a scarab amulet. If you wanted to encourage blessings of strength, vigour and protection you may have worn an ‘Eye of Horus’ amulet, just like everyone else. These amulets were believed to contain magical properties in their own right. Of course due to the power of mass belief in these objects within the community, in a sense they were indeed imbued with magic. After all intention and belief are essential ingredients for the existence of magic.
Many of us today are still drawn to the idea of magic through our choice in literature and entertainment, despite the fact that modern society has largely moved away from belief in the magical, viewing it as superstition and fairytale. Have we lost something essential through rejecting belief in life’s magical potential?
Imagine for a minute that you are holding your own personal charm or talisman. Your charm has been created in response to your story. Your intention is to consciously engage with your charm, even if for a few moments each day. In doing so your charm works for you. Now as you hold it you are reminded of thoughts, feelings and choices uncovered in our session together. A form of magic is created!
What are some of the things your charm may do for you?
- Remind you of a life goal you wish to achieve.
- Remind you of a path you have decided to take in response to an issue you are dealing with.
- Help you to summon courage when needed.
- Help you summon a desired feeling state, one you have identified as positive for a given situation.
- Support you when you are feeling low, reminding you of your strengths.
- Help you clear your mind of unwanted thoughts.
- Your charm will be a constant reminder of the thoughts and feelings you consciously imbue it with.
- as well as
- Your Guide and Companion on the journey
Who is Robyn Allan ?
Robyn is a graduate of Creative Art Therapy at the Melbourne Institute of Creative Art Therapy (MIECAT). She holds a Diploma in Transpersonal Counselling and studied Shamanic practice at Ikon Institute (Now Phoenix). She is also an award-winning, qualified jeweller and Fine Art graduate, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
Robyn developed this simple method over many years. It combines her skills and passions into a unique service.
“For a long time I strived to bring meaning into the pieces I made as a jeweller. I studied lots of the things that held meaning for me. I followed many paths and made discoveries about myself and more importantly what I could best offer the world. I have been drawn to, and fascinated by, spiritual and magical aspects of life but I have also been equally concerned with grounding my studies in experience as well as theory. Everything clicked together for me when I acquired the wonderful creative art therapy skill of truly listening to another’s story with curiosity and compassion. It was the missing piece of the puzzle that has allowed me to ground my transpersonal practice and express myself the way I always wanted in my jewellery and art making for the benefit of others.”
Through the act of charm and talisman making, Robyn’s service transforms the magic and spiritual aspects of past cultures, whilst adapting these objects to suit the modern, more individual lifestyles of today.
